The Gods of Pegāna, published in 1905, was Lord Dunsany's first book and a revolutionary work that essentially created modern fantasy literature. Rather than retelling existing myths, Dunsany invented an entire pantheon of gods and their mythology from scratch.
Written in deliberately archaic, biblical language, the book presents the creation myth of Pegāna and introduces deities like MANA-YOOD-SUSHAI (who dreamed the universe into existence) and Skarl the Drummer (whose drumming keeps MANA-YOOD-SUSHAI asleep—for if he wakes, all will end). Each short chapter explores different gods, their powers, and their relationships to humanity.
Dunsany's innovative approach—creating mythology as fiction—influenced virtually every fantasy writer who followed, from Tolkien to Lovecraft to modern fantasy authors. The book's ornate prose and cosmic scope established conventions still used today. The Gods of Pegāna proved that entirely invented mythologies could feel as ancient and profound as real-world legends.
